Initialization is stuck and cannot proceed to the next step. What should I do?

Applicable Models

All TNAS models

Applicable Versions

TOS 5, TOS 6, TOS 7 (initialization stage)

Symptoms

When you open the initialization page by entering the TNAS IP address directly in a browser, the page stays on "No disk detected / Please install a hard drive and detect again" and cannot proceed to the next step. Common signs:

  • The hard drives are properly installed, the drive LEDs are normal, and the device can be seen in TNAS PC;
  • Clicking refresh or pressing F5 does not help, and the page does not advance automatically even after a long wait;
  • The page loads abnormally, showing a blank screen, only the background, or failing to load page resources.
Quick Check

If the same IP works fine when opened from TNAS PC but shows "No disk detected" when entered directly in a browser, it is usually caused by browser cache rather than a hard drive failure.

Solutions

  1. Open TNAS PC on your computer and wait for it to find the device;
  2. Double-click the device name, or click the "Login / Open" button on the right side of the device;
  3. The browser will open the initialization page automatically, and you should be able to proceed to the next step normally.

The address opened by TNAS PC carries extra parameters, which is effectively a new URL, so the browser will not read the old cache.

Method 2: Add a Parameter to the Address

Add /?b=1 after the IP address in the browser address bar, for example:

http://192.168.1.100/?b=1
  • Replace 192.168.1.100 with the actual TNAS IP address;
  • The number can be any value, such as ?b=2 or ?b=abc;
  • Use the English question mark ?, not a full-width question mark.

Method 3: Force Refresh

Operating SystemShortcut
WindowsCtrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R
macOSCommand + Shift + R
Some laptopsFn + Ctrl + F5

Clicking the browser's "Refresh" button or pressing F5 may still use the cache, so use one of the forced refresh methods above.

Method 4: Hard Reload with Developer Tools

For Chrome / Edge:

  1. Press F12 on the initialization page to open Developer Tools (macOS: Option + Command + I);
  2. Right-click the "Refresh" button in the browser toolbar;
  3. Select "Hard Reload" or "Empty Cache and Hard Reload";
  4. Wait for the page to reload and check whether it proceeds to the next step.

"Empty Cache and Hard Reload" only clears the cache for the current website and does not remove data from other websites in the browser. If the browser does not offer this option, open an incognito / private window and enter the same IP to try again.

Method 5: Use Another Access Entry

Choose any of the following to bypass the old cache:

  • Enter http://tnas.local in the address bar (only for uninitialized devices);
  • Use TNAS mobile to initialize the system (supported on TOS 6, TOS 7 and later);
  • Use another computer or browser, or open the page on a phone.

Method 6: Restart the Device

  1. Press and hold the power button to shut down, or unplug the power and then power it on again;
  2. Wait 2~3 minutes and confirm in TNAS PC that the device is back online;
  3. Prefer opening the page from TNAS PC or with a ?b= parameter in the address.

Restarting does not clear the browser cache, but it can rule out the possibility that the hard drives were not re-detected.

Still Not Resolved?

Please contact technical support and provide the following information:

  • Device model, and the Bootloader / TOS version (visible at the bottom of the page or in TNAS PC);
  • Browser name and version, and operating system (for example, Windows 11 + Chrome 141);
  • A full screenshot of the problem page (including the address bar);
  • Whether opening from TNAS PC works normally;
  • The number and model of installed hard drives, and the drive LED status;
  • The operations already tried and their results, such as adding ?b=1, force refresh, hard reload, switching browsers, or restarting the device.
